This is an interpretation of the short story "Everyday Use" which was originally published in 1967 as one of the stories compiled in the book "In Love and Trouble" by Alice Walker. "Everyday Use" is narrated by bucolic Georgia inhabitant Mama Johnson who is the mother of two significantly and radically different sisters. One of them Dee is forthright, aggressive, ambitious, vivacious, does not accept a "no" for an answer; she is formally educated at a prestigious urban college, and she is strikingly beautiful. Her sister Maggie is characteristically quite the opposite of Dee. Maggie is described by her own mother as relatively unattractive, this made worse by a fire that burnt down their home and also scarred her. Maggie would feel more comfortable in the security of her own mother and her rural Georgia roots. She did not leave for greener pastures like her flashy sister, she even chews snuff just like her big and strong mother. Dee despises her rural background, but she longs to forge a black identity for herself. She takes on native African names that she hardly understands, attempts to greet in an African language. To her home-crafted articles like quilts are better put to decorating, than the purpose for which they were crafted. When she visits Mama and her sister Maggie, she wants to forcefully usurp and carry off some of these crafts.
